Start your fiber journey at the source by learning the integral art form of hand-spinning yarn on a wheel. Create your own custom hand-spun skein of yarn, over just two 2-hour classes with private instruction from Yukako.
You will learn the whole journey of turning fiber to yarn, including drafting, carding and blending techniques, how to operate the spinning wheel and how to spin natural roving wool into single-ply and two-ply yarn. You will take home one hank of your own hand-spun yarn!
Spinning wheel is faster and produces more yarn than drop spindle, but requires knowledge of drafting technique. For this reason, we recommend students take our Drop Spindle class first. We teach on an Ashford Kiwi3 Spinning Wheel.
Class Outline:
- Students will first learn to spin roving (pre-carded) into one-ply yarn.
- Learn fiber preparation techniques by carding wool using a carder tool
- Students will blend wool to make a custom color with small hand carders to make another one-ply yarn.
- Students will ply these two yarns together to make a 2-ply yarn.
-
Finally, learn how to bind the yarn using the Niddy Noddy tool.
Instruction is curated to your individual learning objectives. For example, you can choose not to learn how to card.
This class is only available at the DUMBO studio between Wednesday and Saturday. Please use the form below to let us know your preferred date/time and your experience.
