Workshop: KASURI Warp Dyeing with Yukiko Yokoyama
Workshop: KASURI Warp Dyeing with Yukiko Yokoyama
Saturday, September 28, 2024
1:00pm - 5:00pm
at Loop of the Loom - DUMBO
This is an intermedia level but beginners level are also allowed, however, the instruction will be tailored for those with some knowledge of warp setting on a two-shaft loom.
In this workshop, weavers will learn dyeing techniques and warping instructions to use this method more effectively, incorporating many of the tips by Yokoyama. If you've been doing it in your own way, now is the time to learn professional techniques! By methodically setting the dyed threads on the loom, participants can achieve an artistic expression distinct from solid-colored warps.
You will practice with pre-dyed Kasuri yarn by warping and threading on each loom. If time permits, some participants may try weaving. After grasping the image post-threading, each participant will dye their own undyed wool yarn.
Loop of the Loom students can use the project in future advanced classes or you can weave at home with or without a Yoroke reed.
Dyeing will use synthetic dyes and microwave methods. You can take home the dyed yarn, but it will be wet, so please bring a plastic bag for transport.
Items to bring:
-Plastic bag or sheet
- Gloves for dyeing
- Apron or lab coat
- Notebook
- Refreshments (water, snacks)
+ We recommend also attending a Yoroke weaving workshop (10/5), which will add to your skills and help you create even more beautiful Yoroke weaving.
About the Artist:
Yukiko Yokoyama is a textile artist with over 50 years of weaving experience. Through teaching, she has deepened her own creative practice, fusing various techniques to produce a wide range of works. Born in Hiroshima, Japan, to a family of kimono merchants, Yokoyama is also the daughter of a hibakusha (atomic bomb survivor). She studied textiles at Musashino Art University and later learned from the renowned fiber artist Toshiko Horiuchi MacAdam at the Bunka Gakuin Art & Craft Institute.
In 1977, she founded her textile art studio, Dream Weavers, where she creates her own works and teaches students. Since then, she has opened classes in four cities and nurtured many students. Deeply captivated by "Yoroke-ori”, she developed her own techniques, combining them with dyeing methods. She has won numerous awards at major craft exhibitions in Japan, and at the age of 40, her work was recognized and purchased by the legendary kimono textile artisan Itchiku Kubota. Her works have been exhibited not only in Japan but also in Germany, New York, and Paris.
"Yoroke-ori" is a technique that creates wave-like patterns by altering the spacing of warp threads using a specialized fan reed. Yukiko Yokoyama is a pioneer of Yoroke-ori globally. In addition to weaving, she loves singing and has taught popular music and chanson.
