Sashiko Stitching Workshops

Sashiko Stitching Workshops

$300.00

Today, Sashiko is gaining popularity because of its simplicity, beauty, and the concept of visible mending. Sashiko as “merely” stitching and Sashiko as “super cool” art... Join a unique opportunity to discover Sashiko's artistry from Japanese artisan Atsushi Futatsuya. You will feel the incredible passion of one of the few Sashiko art successors, which will inspire and broaden your understanding of handicrafts. Instead of saying "beginner" and "intermediate", he provides the "Core & Essence" workshop, which includes the fundamentals of Sashiko, and the "Application & Practice" workshop, which focuses on more practical stitching. Choose one or both classes for the Sashiko stitching workshop.

Sashiko Workshop I
"Core & Essence"

The form "Kata" explains everything we practice as Sashiko

Saturday, August 3, 2024
10:00am - 4:30pm
at Loop of the Loom - DUMBO
(map)
$300 (+ material $70 at the class)

Beginners are welcome! Atsushi will give a lecture on the art and history of sashiko, based on the wisdom of the tradition of his family and many years of teaching experience. You will learn how to transfer the pattern to the fabric, use a long needle and thimble, make even stitches, and find the joy of stitching while making a cloth of Asanoha pattern. This workshop may feel like a strict instructional format, as all participants are required to follow Atsushi's method, even if they have learned from other Sashiko teachers. Start practicing this meditative art and advance your skills with a lot of hands-on guidance by Atsushi. Each student can take their work home with the Upcycle Stitches Sashiko Kit.

Sashiko Workshop II
"Application & Practice"

– and yes, we will extend it to Boro.

Sunday, August 4, 2024
10:00am - 4:30pm
at Loop of the Loom - DUMBO
(map)
$300 (+ material $50* at the class)
*subject to change

This workshop will be a bit more easy-going like an independent study while using the technique and understanding of "Core & Essence". You will apply sashiko onto actual projects such as ordinary clothes you wear. From preparing the fabric to mend it to enjoying your future projects by mindful stitching, Atsushi will guide you to find your own rhythm in stitching while teaching the Hitotsumezashi pattern.

* "Core & Essence" workshop by Atsushi is a prerequisite. Beginners should take a “Core & Essence” workshop on August 3rd before attending a "Application & Practice" workshop.

About Instructor:
Atsushi "Azu" Futatsuya is a Sashiko artist and curator who is the 3rd generation of a surviving Sashiko business family in Gifu, Japan. He grew up in a traditional textile artisan family who lived with a pile of fabric, needles, thimbles, and so many colored threads. After his father passed away, Azu and his mother Keiko founded Sashi.Co & Keiko Futatsuya in 2015 to revive the Sashiko business, even though they live apart in America and Japan. Azu has been introducing Sashiko artistry through workshops and building a community around this incredible craft tradition worldwide.
