Kakishibu, a natural dye unique to Japan, is a tannin dye made by fermenting persimmons. At Onomichi Kakien, each piece of Onomichi Hanpu, a cotton canvas woven in the local town was carefully dyed over time. Onomichi Hanpu is produced in a restored factory that is used to manufacture ship masts and industrial bags. In Onomichi, which prospered as a port, kakishibu was used as a paint to reinforce hulls and fishing nets. Make something with this unique kakishibu property. It is durable, and water resistant, with beautiful amber color. The more you use it, the more it rubs, and the more it will give it a vintage look like leather.
